This semester began with an exploration of architectural precedents that engage with the ground in ways uniquely responsive to their context. Working in groups, we selected two contrasting approaches to ground interaction, analyzing their similarities and evaluating how their strategies succeed in addressing site-specific challenges.
Situated on a unique site in North Little Rock, Arkansas, our next project focused on reimagining the riverside to create a vibrant hub for community engagement. The design incorporated innovative water management strategies and prioritized the use of sustainable materials, such as mass timber, to align with environmental goals.
By incorporating large swivel doors and open facades, our design fosters exploration and a sense of invitation. The interplay of open interiors and warm oak finishes creates a welcoming and vibrant environment for the community.
The exterior features a woven wooden canopy that guides pedestrians through the site, seamlessly blending functionality and aesthetic appeal. Strategically designed to overlap and shade key public spaces, the canopy provides a cool, inviting retreat during the summer heat. At the heart of the site lies an open courtyard, offering a flexible venue for a variety of community events and gatherings.
After splitting into individual projects, I reimagined the columns and canopies in our design. Inspired by the canopies in Little Rock, which enhance year-round enjoyment of the landscape, I designed an organic, forest-like canopy to reflect the lush greenery across the river. This inviting feature strengthens the connection between nature and architecture, a concept mirrored indoors through column designs that blur the line between exterior and interior
The program was designed to create a guided path that ensures smooth circulation while fostering a peaceful interaction with pedestrians and visitors. The layout follows the PREP method, an organized scheduling of buildings that optimizes traffic flow and strengthens community connections.
